The placing of malleable penile implants in cisgender men’s penile corpora cavernosa is well-understood and widely described in medical literature. Dr. Nicolas Morel-Journel, of the Centre Hospitalier Lyon-Sud (France), has developed and transferred the concept to the corpora cavernosa in metoidioplasties through a series of trials.

Metoidioplasty is a surgical gender-reassignment solution, an alternative to phalloplasty for FTM patients. It involves the release of the hypertrophied clitoris—hypertrophied through testosterone treatments—and the construction of a small penis resembling the penis of a cis man. The surgeon can then also seal off of the vagina, lengthen the urinary tract, and construct a scrotum.

After surgery, the involved tissues can retract, thus reducing the final size of the neo-penis. Dr. Nicolas Morel-Journel therefore suggests the insertion of prostheses inside the corpora cavernosa, to maintain the size obtained through the surgery.

ZSI offers a pair of small implants—4 mm in diameter, 12 cm long—that can be recut if necessary, using the same technique as with penile implants for cis men.

On the August 29, 2017, in Lyon, Dr. Nicolas Morel-Journel and his team implanted the first ZSI D4 implant—one of the many penile implants developed by the ZSI company.

ZSI is the only European manufacturer of artificial urinary sphincters and of malleable and inflatable penile implants, as solutions for male urological problems (incontinence), sexual complications (Erectile Dysfunction), and gender identity procedures (prostheses for trans men and women).
